Medical Bills Financial Assistance -> As students at OHSU receiving a PhD stipend, many of us qualify for OHSU's financial assistance program. Full financial assistance is provided to patients with a demonstrated inability to pay who have received medically necessary services and who have family income not in excess of 300% of the Federal Poverty Guide Level and partial financial assistance (65% of services) is provided to patients with an income in excess of 300% but less than 400%. Requests for financial assistance may be made at any point before, during, or after the provision of care. See our page on student health for more information! Tax Help Session -> We are working on creating a tax help session with a Certified Public Accountant in January. We are trying to cover topics about how to file your taxes with a 1099, but are there any tax-related topics you would like us to cover? Are evenings good for students, or during the day?
-> OCTRI's Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Research, and Design Program (BERD) is holding a seminar to help researchers think about sample size considerations. It will discuss how to find and frame the information you need to perform a sample size calculation as well as discuss the components for sample size calculations. -> Thu, October 4, 1pm – 3pm in Campus Services Bldg Rm 679 Impact Challenge Workshops -> September 12- "Why Professionalism Matters: Successful Communication &Time Management Skills" -> October 24- "High Impact Publishing: Getting Your Work Published and Read" -> November 7- “Rules of Research: 10 Things You Should be Doing with Your Data" -> All workshops are from 2:00 to 3:30 PM and are free for students. NRSA Workshop -> Tuesday, October 16, 2018, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. @ Mac Hall 3198 -> Description: Learn about the non-research elements of an NRSA grant: Topics covered include how to set up your proposal in InfoEd, how to develop a budget, how to manage reference letters, biosketches, and other institutional forms, and elements of a great training plan. -> Led by Gavin Hamilton, grants and contracts administrator with the Office of Proposal and Award Management, and Rachel Dresbeck, senior director, OHSU Research Development Write Wining Grants Workshop -> Tuesday, October 12, 2018, 8:30 am - 4 p.m. in the OHSU auditorium. -> Description: Dr. John Robertson from Grant Writers' Seminars and Workshops will lead a day-long seminar addressing practical and conceptual aspects important to writing competitive proposals. Regardless of agency, participants will be taught to write with a linear progression of logic, leading reviewers through their application. Strategies designed to merit a fundable priority score are emphasized. The next GSO coffee break is on Wednesday, October 17 from 2-3 pm in the Synapse! AVDS Happy Hour on Fri, October 26 from 5pm – 6pm in the Mac Hall Courtyard (weather permitting. Java with Jacobs on Wed, October 17 from 12pm – 1pm in CLSB 3A002 The Bridges Collaborative Care Clinic -> An interprofessional, student-led clinic that engages vulnerable populations by providing low-barrier, participant-centered care and services in the Portland Metro area. -> Bridges is hosting an open all-member meeting today, Wednesday, Oct. 3rd at 5:30pm at RLSB Room 3A002 (3730 SW Moody Ave, Portland). Everyone is welcome! New interested students, faculty, and community members are encouraged to join. There are plenty of opportunities for graduate students with no experience in clinical medicine to get involved! OHSU Teaching and Learning Center – Rich -> TLC offers workshops that are primarily aimed at instructors, but some might be interesting to students interested in pursuing educational careers
Jackie Wirz, introduction Rick Goranflo, introduction -> Dependent Healthcare: OHSU is able to to reimburse for dependent insurance up to $400 per dependent per month. Have your dependent(s) enroll on a plan that works best for them through healthcare.gov. Send Rick Goranflo your monthly, quarterly, or annual receipts and he will submit for them for reimbursement. There is no registration process or timeline to enroll, so you can submit receipts at any time. See our page on student health for more info. OHSU updates All Hill ->Next Meeting is next Friday from 12-1 pm in MRB 310 ->Current All-Hill GSO Reps: Tim, Danielle, Marc, Gabe, and (Adam?), which leaves 3 more open spots to try to fill. Also, Erin is the CAP rep! Funding Requests ->WIS will make a request for funds to support graduate student attendance at the annual WIS Mixer in November. Requesting how much now? (Received $300 in 2016). (We have $600-$1000 allocated for funding requests) Present request ->Seeking funds for covering a select number of student tickets in the amount of $300 ->Last year they received this money to subsidize ticket costs. -> Discussion
Committee updates Travel Award- Breanna -> Deadline for Fall applications is Dec 7 by 5 pm. -> Winners of the Summer awards are as follows: Brittany Alperin (SMAA), Carlina Heimann (GSO), and Graham Rykiel (GSO) CAP-Erin -> New policy on student led activities seeking to perform community outreach -> Removed an existing policy on Residency-student Exchange -> Grading policy is in review and it contains the ability to repeal incompletes if approved -> The next meeting will focus on a change in Scheduled Examination/Assessment so if you have opinions you can let Erin know! Union- Marc -> Get involed! Come to one of the weekly meetings (see event page for details). GPS- Eileen ->The new umbrella program, Program in Biomedical Sciences, will start recruiting next fall. Any student that would like to get involved in laying the finer details of the program’s groundwork should contact me at [email protected]. ->Eileen is leaving position in GPS at the start of 2019 to focus on graduating. If you care about the future of graduate education at OHSU and will be a past your quals in January, come talk to me! SHAC- Brittany -> There’s a new psychologist, Dr. Hanna Hoeflich and there is no longer a waitlist for behavioral health visits! -> They are searching to hire a suicide prevention coordinator -> They are looking to hire a part time MD to add to the JBT staff -> Get your one free massage! - Susannah Skye -> If you have pacific source, you don’t need a referral for acupuncture -> Get your flu shot!
