Announcements: GSO Survey Results (survey now closed, we will be announcing winners next week) Communications: most people get information from emails and word-of-mouth, with some information being transmitted via posters; we have deleted the FB account since no one seems to use it and we don't feel that the GSO officers have the time and man-power to keep up with it; we have updated the website though and we are going to push people to refer to it for news and events, along with the event calendar! Events: students agreed that skate night probably doesn't need to be repeated, liked the idea of organized outdoor events, were excited about the prospects of us organizing a game or arcade night -> we will endeavor make existing networking events more visible so that students can attend them rather than the GSO organizing new events. We are cognoscente of the fact that many people commented on not feeling comfortable at events because they didn't know people, so that we are going to try to keep this in mind as we organize events (community-building) W-2's: we are having a meeting regarding W-2's on July 10th; the administration is looking into whether they can switch us onto W-2's and we are putting pressure on them to continue this work ->Data regarding wanting to save into tax-favored retirement accounts will help us put more pressure on the administration to get us onto W-2's Feelings re: administration: we all felt that these results could have been "a lot worse"; a major take-home that the GSO can address is that students don't seem to know what the administration stands for and we can have the administrators come to talk to students to increase transparency and build trust Major issues: top three are pay, tax help, and career development ->We talked about some of the issues that were highly rated as "I care about this, but it's not in my top three" -> the GSO can support the organizations dedicated to these causes like diversity (AVDS and CDI) and sexual assault (Gender Equality- represented at the meeting by Cameron Fisher) WSO Meetings, Wed 1-2 pm in Mac 3198, Fri 1-2pm in Mac 1162 and CHH 3070. Impact Challenge Workshops are back: AMAZING workshop series in the summer and fall about how to present your research and build a professional network ->2nd OHSU Impact Challenge workshop on Wednesday, July 11 from 2:00-3:30 in BICC 124. ->Event description: Does networking make you think of a used car salesman? Does talking to strangers make you cringe? It doesn’t have to be that way! In “So what do you do?: How to Network and Talk About Yourself” we will discuss the science of schmoozing, and help you develop a networking plan that is dynamic, authentic, and multidimensional. You will practice deploying your plan to build genuine conversations that create a network you’ll be excited about! ->The workshop will be led by Jackie Wirz Gender Equality is a new group on campus that has been created to address power structures and inequality that exists. They have funding and are looking for people to get involved! There will be support for creating better avenues for sexual harassment reporting and action. If you are interested in getting involved, you can contact Cameron Fisher (fishecam@ohsu.edu). ->Meeting coming up on August 6 from 6-7 pm in CLSB 3A03, be on the lookout for more information Invited speakers: None ->Jackie and Rick are busy, not in attendance OHSU updates Grad Council ->Stipends approved: $30,000 pre-quals, $31,500 post-quals ->Comments: OHSU is unique in offering this two-tiered system to incentivize qualifying earlier. Other universities that have a two-tiered stipend system often offer a higher stipend the first year of graduate school to offset moving costs, then transition to a constant stipend for the remainder of graduate school ->Responses: Some students like the bump in the stipend after quals, others note that this isn't really an incentive since students don't necessarily get to decide when their qualifying exam is set (it's largely based upon program), think it might have been more applicable to times before the programs were more structured but that it seems like a false incentive now All-Hill ->Meeting on Friday, July 13 from 12-1 pm in CLSB room 2S020. Committee updates Travel Awards (Breanna present) ->Reminder that you must apply for travel awards the term before you travel to be eligible (see exact deadlines with the dates of travel indicated on the website to help guide your applications!) ->We will be announcing Travel Award Winners publicly at GSO meetings from now on as a way to recognize graduate student accomplishments! ->Winners from the summer term: GSO TA's: Italia Pacentine, Ilsa Kirby, Bene Ramirez SMAA TA: Eileen Torres AVDS (Gabe was not in attendance) ->AVDS is taking over Vollum Happy on the last Friday of every month this summer and you are all invited! The goal is to host regular events to help foster community between grad programs. Please contact us if you would like to get posters to advertise in your department: [email protected] Student Service Committee ->Student Services have created Co-Curricular Learning Outcomes, which essentially describe how student services are supposed to serve students – and are informative about what services are available for students who may not be aware. See below to download a copy of a PDF describing these! ->Spread the word about financial advising by Mike Matheny. He is here to help with debt planning, budgeting, and other financial matters. Really trying to target students at highest financial risk [e.g. high debt credit card or student loan]. CAP (Erin present) ->Another policy on enrollment into multiple degree/certificate offerings was approved and should be out for public comment shortly. Those interested/affected can be on the lookout for that! ->Another approved policy removes the requirement of submission of tax payer identification information (this mostly effects those that do not have a tax payer ID number) GPS (Eileen present) ->The new PhD program in Biomedical Sciences is currently recruiting for its leadership positions. ->PMCB is expected to recruit one more class and then PBS will begin enrollment in 2020.
